Public Violence; Taliban Report Execution of Flogging Sentences on Five in Kabul and Daikundi

The court stated in a press release on Tuesday (7 Asad) that these individuals were each punished with 39 lashes in the presence of the public.

Meanwhile, in another press release, the Taliban's Supreme Court reported the execution of a whipping sentence on a woman accused of "illicit relations" in Daikundi.

The press release stated that the accused was sentenced to one year of imprisonment and 39 lashes.

The Taliban's Supreme Court added that these punishments were carried out after being confirmed by the group's Supreme Court.

The Taliban consider the implementation of such rulings as part of "Islamic Sharia"; however, they usually do not publish details regarding the trial and adjudication process of the accused.

This comes as international human rights organizations have repeatedly expressed concern over the lack of a fair judicial system and the increase in corporal punishments in Afghanistan.

Since the Taliban's return to power in August 2021, the application of punishments such as public whippings and the enforcement of strict rulings have significantly increased.

Human rights organizations have repeatedly described the implementation of such punishments as a clear violation of human rights and have called for their immediate cessation; however, the Taliban continue to emphasize the continuation of these practices.

The Taliban's Supreme Court has announced that four individuals were publicly whipped in the Char Asyab district of Kabul on charges of sodomy.
