The story of a female journalist and civil activist from Afghanistan being forgotten in Pakistan

After the collapse of the previous Afghan government, Lida Sayed-Khili, known for her media activities and loud voice against the Taliban, was sacked from her job and faced threats. She was forced to leave the country with her two young children and seek refuge in Pakistan.

But contrary to expectations, Pakistan was not a safe haven for her either; without a visa or residence permit, and with severe financial hardship and a dire health condition, her life grew closer to collapse each day. In the meantime, she lost one of her kidneys, and due to lack of access to medical services, her physical condition has worsened.

She has repeatedly sought help from international organizations. She sent letters and made calls to Reporters Without Borders (RSF) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR); but, as she says, she received neither a response nor support.

Ms. Sayed-Khili said: “I told them all I’m a journalist, I’m without a guardian, I’m sick, I have two children, I’m at risk of deportation; but no one listened.”

She also added: “My comrades, you left me alone; in the days when fear and pain cast a shadow over my soul, no hand was extended to help me.

I am the same journalist who once stood beside you for the truth; but today, in the silence of loneliness, I am left alone. Does my voice no longer have value to be heard?”

This report reflects the life story of a female journalist who, after the political changes of 2021 and increased threats against media workers, was forced to leave Afghanistan and seek refuge in Pakistan. The harsh conditions of migration, lack of access to basic services, and unanswered requests for help are among the challenges faced by a significant number of Afghan journalists, especially women, after the Taliban’s return to power.

Lida Sayed-Khili, an Afghan female journalist and civil activist, fled to Pakistan after the fall of Kabul and direct threats from the Taliban. Now, with only one kidney, without legal documents, and at risk of forced deportation, she lives in silence and oblivion.
