Pentagon: Hasty withdrawal from Afghanistan was one of America's darkest moments

The attack, which occurred on August 26, 2021, during the evacuation of Afghan collaborators with foreign forces, claimed the lives of 13 U.S. service members and nearly 170 Afghan civilians. Since then, this day has been commemorated in the U.S. in honor of the fallen soldiers in Kabul.

The U.S. Department of Defense stated in a announcement that the courage and sacrifice of the fallen forces will never be forgotten and will continue to inspire. According to the department, the Pentagon’s special investigative panel is still examining the management of the withdrawal, and investigations will continue until “the full truth is revealed and those responsible for the failure are held accountable.”

Lloyd Austin, the U.S. Secretary of Defense, emphasized in the statement: “Justice for the families of the victims is a fundamental priority. The sacrifice of those 13 soldiers is the driving force behind this panel’s mission. We are obligated to uncover the true details of what happened for them, the American people, and all service members, to restore trust and ensure full accountability.”

The Pentagon also noted that the withdrawal from Afghanistan resulted in heavy casualties, the loss of billions of dollars in equipment, and the creation of one of the darkest chapters of America’s presence in the region.

The investigative panel, led by Sean Parnell, Assistant Secretary of Defense and a veteran of the Afghanistan war, is continuing its work, and the Department of Defense has promised that the investigation process and its findings will be regularly shared with the public.

On the fourth anniversary of the bloody ISIS attack at Kabul airport, the United States Department of Defense once again sharply criticized the chaotic U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021 and emphasized the accountability of those responsible for the event.
