Khalilzad: America has no intention of taking over Bagram

These remarks come as U.S. President Donald Trump threatened on Sunday that if the Taliban does not hand over Bagram Airbase to the U.S., dire consequences will follow.

Mr. Khalilzad wrote on Sunday, 30 Sunbula, in a message on the social media platform X that there is a great deal of false and misleading information regarding the future of security cooperation between the U.S. and Afghanistan. He emphasized that one of these issues is the use of Bagram Airbase for joint counterterrorism operations.

He added: “My understanding is that the United States has no intention of taking Bagram from Afghans or annexing it.”

On Sunday, the U.S. President demanded that the Taliban immediately hand over Bagram Airbase to the U.S., stressing that failure to do so would lead to severe consequences. He also highlighted the strategic importance of Bagram, noting that the base is only about an hour away from an area where China is producing nuclear weapons.

Trump also criticized the Biden administration for abandoning Bagram, calling the decision detrimental to U.S. security interests.

Zalmay Khalilzad, the former U.S. representative for Afghanistan, says the United States has no intention of forcibly seizing Bagram Airbase or annexing it from Afghan soil.
