UN experts: World must prevent any move to normalize Taliban

These experts, on Thursday, 23 Asad (August), stated in a joint statement that the international community must stand firm against any actions to normalize the Taliban.

The statement reads: "Over the past four years, the people of Afghanistan, especially women and girls, have endured a relentless and escalating assault on their fundamental rights and freedoms."

The statement further notes: "The Taliban's institutionalized system of gender discrimination and oppression is so severe that it amounts to crimes against humanity and persecution based on gender; we support all efforts to hold those responsible accountable."

UN experts, while welcoming the arrest warrant for the Taliban leader and chief justice, stated that the situation in Afghanistan is dire but should not be considered a lost cause.

They expressed concern over the increasing cases of human rights violations, including the rise in public executions, corporal punishments, arbitrary detentions, extrajudicial killings, torture, and ill-treatment in detention, the elimination of civic space, and the suppression of human rights defenders.

UN experts also emphasized support for vulnerable Afghan refugees and migrants in neighboring countries, including Iran and Pakistan.

The Taliban, upon their return to power on August 15, 2021, imposed numerous restrictions on the country's citizens, particularly women and girls, and now, four years after these restrictions, the Taliban have not backed down from their stance.

United Nations experts, as the fourth anniversary of the Taliban's return to power approaches, have called on the international community not to accept the oppressive and authoritarian regime of this group.
