Amnesty International calls for immediate release of Mehdi Ansari from Taliban prison

The organization announced in a statement on Saturday (13 Mizan) that the Taliban, in a show trial and grossly unfair proceeding, sentenced this journalist to 18 months in prison.

Pages affiliated with the Taliban published a video on Thursday (10 Mizan) showing Mehdi Ansari’s forced confession. In the video, Ansari admits to being in contact with certain exiled media outlets.

Amnesty International has warned that over the past four years, the Taliban’s judicial system has become a tool for suppressing critical voices against the group’s decrees, policies, and harsh actions.

This human rights organization emphasized that the Taliban, through arbitrary detentions, unlawful imprisonments, enforced disappearances, and forced confessions, silences the voices of opponents, including journalists, civil society members, and human rights activists.

Amnesty International has demanded that the Taliban provide Mehdi Ansari with access to proper medical care, a defense lawyer, and regular family visits.

The organization stressed in conclusion that no journalist should be imprisoned for carrying out their professional duties.

According to reports, Taliban intelligence forces arrested Mehdi Ansari on 14 Mizan last year in the Pul-e-Khushk area of Dasht-e-Barchi, Kabul.

Amnesty International had previously expressed concern multiple times about the mistreatment and torture of this journalist in Taliban custody, calling for his unconditional release.

Reports indicate that the Taliban sentenced this journalist to one and a half years in prison on charges of collaborating with foreign media and publishing critical content against the group, without access to a lawyer or his family.

Amnesty International, in a statement, has called on the Taliban to immediately release Mehdi Ansari, an imprisoned journalist.
