Typhoon Phongwong Kills Two, Displaces Hundreds of Thousands

Phong-Wong battered parts of the main island of Luzon overnight with strong winds, heavy rain, and storm surges. Prior to the typhoon's arrival—which had previously been classified as a "super typhoon"—more than one million people were evacuated from the coastal city of Dingalan in Aurora province on Sunday evening.

The typhoon, known locally in the Philippines as "Uwan," has destroyed homes in the northern city of Santiago in Isabela province and caused tree branches to snap and power poles to topple.

According to initial reports from the Philippines' Office of Civil Defense, at least two people have been killed by the typhoon and two others injured. Additionally, at least three cities have been reported inaccessible due to landslides and road damage.

The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines has announced that more than 400 flights were canceled on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration has reported that the typhoon is now moving over the South China Sea and is expected to shift northeast toward Taiwan. The agency has warned that a large part of the country remains at risk of heavy rains, strong winds, and storm surges.

Phong-Wong is the twenty-first typhoon to hit the Philippines this year, occurring just after Typhoon "Kalmaegi"—a storm that left at least 224 dead in the Philippines and five dead in Vietnam last week.

Typhoon Phong-Wong swept through the northern regions of the Philippines last night, November 10, leaving at least two people dead. The typhoon also caused communication disruptions with some cities and widespread damage to infrastructure.
