Richard Bennett: Violence against Afghan women and girls is unacceptable

Mr Bennett wrote in a note on the X network on Wednesday (25 November) that access to justice is not a privilege, but a right.

The UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights emphasised that in Afghanistan and around the world, women and girls of all diversities deserve dignity, protection, and equality.

He also pointed to the rise in child marriages and forced marriages, stressing that such practices constitute a crime.

The UN Women organisation announced on 7 September that since the Taliban's return to power, the rate of early and child marriages in Afghanistan has risen in an unprecedented manner. The organisation warned that this trend has led to an increase in teenage pregnancies and, consequently, higher maternal mortality rates.

The US Embassy for Afghanistan also reported last year on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women that the Taliban's educational restrictions have increased the rate of early and underage marriages by 25 percent. The embassy added that estimates show 28.7 percent of women aged 20 to 24 in Afghanistan were married before the age of 18.

Richard Bennett, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Human Rights for Afghanistan, stated on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women that violence against Afghan women is unacceptable.
