50 human rights organizations support international campaign to protect Afghan journalists

These organizations, on Friday, August 24, emphasized in the statement the urgent need to support Afghan journalists in these countries.

Citing binding and customary international human rights documents, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and international conventions, the human rights organizations called on host governments to immediately halt the detention, forced deportation, and deprivation of fundamental rights of Afghan journalists, expedite the processing of their asylum cases, and provide conditions for their safe resettlement.

The signatories warned that neglecting the situation of these journalists constitutes a disregard for threats to freedom of expression, human dignity, and the right to life, as media freedom is the backbone of democracy, and protecting journalists ensures truth, justice, and collective awareness.

Following the widespread deportation of migrants from Iran and Pakistan, the Organization for the Support of Afghan Media launched a campaign to prevent the deportation and transfer of journalists to safe countries.

Four years after the Taliban's return to power, many media outlets have shut down due to Taliban restrictions and economic challenges, and many experienced Afghan journalists have left the country. However, a small number of media outlets remaining in Afghanistan continue to operate under severe Taliban pressure and censorship. Over the past four years, the Taliban has heavily censored and suppressed media, detaining, torturing, and imprisoning media workers and journalists.

According to statements from media support organizations, at least 10 journalists and media workers are currently detained by the Taliban, and the director and two reporters of Nesim Radio in Daikundi have also been detained by Taliban intelligence on charges of publishing reports from organizations and opponents of the Taliban.

Fifty human rights, civil, and Afghan diaspora organizations issued a joint statement expressing support for the campaign to protect Afghan journalists in Iran, Pakistan, and Turkey.
