New York mayoral candidates spar over Gaza-Israel war

Zohran Mamdani, the frontrunning Democratic candidate and a member of the "Democratic Socialists," accused Israel of genocide against Palestinians in this debate.

Andrew Cuomo, the former governor of New York who is running independently in the mayoral election, accused Mamdani of not being a "real Democrat" because he had supported the "Leave the ballot blank" campaign during the presidential election; a campaign launched in protest against U.S. support for Israel amid the Gaza war.

Mamdani responded by saying: "I said leave the ballot blank because the primary election is an opportunity to express dissent. Like many Americans, I was horrified by Israel's genocide against Palestinians."

He also added regarding the disarming of Hamas: "Of course they should lay down their arms. I hope for a lasting and just ceasefire. For justice, we must also address the roots of the war, including occupation, siege, and apartheid."

Cuomo, in response, called Mamdani's positions "cold and heartless" and said he "does not recognize Israel's right to exist as a Jewish state" and has refused to condemn the slogan "globalize the intifada."

Meanwhile, Curtis Sliwa, the Republican candidate, also attacked Mamdani, saying he has refused to condemn the Hamas group. Sliwa accused both the Democratic and independent candidates of remaining "silent" regarding Donald Trump's role in stopping the Gaza war.

In the first New York City mayoral debate, the Gaza war and Israel-Palestine relations became one of the most contentious topics of discussion among Zohran Mamdani, Andrew Cuomo, and Curtis Sliwa.
