US Senator: There is definitive evidence that Mahmoud Shah Habibi was arrested by the Taliban

Mahmoud Shah Habibi was detained in August 2022 in Kabul by Taliban intelligence, and since then, no information about his fate has been available. The U.S. Department of Justice has offered a five-million-dollar reward for information about him.

Habibi’s brother has requested that the CIA use its connections with the Taliban to secure his release, attributing the Taliban’s denials and the CIA’s inaction to the continuation of his detention.

Reports indicate that the Taliban detained him on suspicion of involvement in a U.S. drone strike that led to the killing of Ayman al-Zawahiri, the leader of al-Qaeda. Habibi’s family rejects this accusation, stating that he had no role in that operation.

Despite efforts by the Biden and Trump administrations to negotiate with the Taliban, no progress has been made in securing Mahmoud Shah Habibi’s release.

Chris Coons, United States Senator, emphasized that there is irrefutable evidence of the detention of Mahmoud Shah Habibi, an American-Afghan citizen and former head of Afghanistan’s Aviation Authority, by the Taliban; however, the Taliban have consistently denied this matter.
