Sushila Karki sworn in as Nepal's first female prime minister

This appointment came after the President of Nepal met and held discussions with the army chief, Ashok Raj Sigdel, and leaders of the protest movement known as "Gen Z."

The protests began after a ban on the use of social media was announced. Although the ban was later lifted, at least 51 people were killed and more than 1,300 were injured during the unrest.

K.P. Sharma Oli, the former Prime Minister, resigned on September 18 due to ongoing public protests in response to the government's decision to block certain social media platforms.

According to media reports, the protesters, mostly young people, have demanded an end to corruption and better economic opportunities. In negotiations between the Supreme Court Bar Association and representatives of the protesters, they announced their intention to nominate Sushila Karki for the position of interim Prime Minister. Karki, in her remarks, stated: "When I was asked, I accepted."

According to a statement from the Office of the President of Nepal, her swearing-in ceremony took place on Friday night at 9:15 local time. It is also expected that two other ministers will be appointed to the interim government simultaneously.

As tensions ease, life in the capital is returning to normal; markets have reopened, and vehicle traffic has resumed. Police forces, who were previously armed with firearms, are now only carrying batons in public areas. However, some routes remain closed, and families in Kathmandu's hospitals are still receiving the bodies of victims.

A relative of one deceased protester said that after his friends retreated, he decided to continue protesting. Hours later, news came that he had died in the hospital. Another family reported that one of the victims, who had been married for only a month, was killed during the protests.

Following intense public protests against corruption and restrictions on access to social media, Sushila Karki, the Chief Justice of Nepal Supreme Court, appointed and sworn in as the country's first female Prime Minister.
