UN experts: Countries must implement their commitment to gender equality

The statement noted that gender is influenced by social and cultural norms, roles, and power structures, and it undergoes change over time.

The experts warned that legal and political frameworks lacking a gender perspective exacerbate structural inequalities rather than reducing them.

Expressing concern over efforts to revert to rigid and binary concepts of gender, they stressed that such approaches threaten decades of progress in human rights and gender equality, while ignoring the lived realities of women, girls, and individuals with diverse gender identities.

The UN experts also underscored the need to recognize and address multilayered discrimination, including discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity, noting that international instruments, such as the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women, provide a broader definition of gender-based discrimination.

They called on governments, international institutions, the private sector, and other stakeholders to renew their commitments to gender equality and consistently integrate this principle into their laws, policies, and practices.

In their view, ensuring the rights and dignity of all women and girls, in all their diversity, is vital for the coherence of the international human rights system, and fulfilling the promise of human rights is not possible without it.

This statement comes as the UN Women’s division previously reported that, following the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan, Afghan women have faced significant setbacks in human development and gender equality indicators.

According to the report, Afghanistan, with a 76 percent gender inequality gap in areas such as education, health, financial access, and participation in decision-making, ranks as the second country with the largest gender gap globally, following Yemen.

The findings indicate that eight out of ten Afghan women are deprived of the right to education and employment, and on average, they realize only 17 percent of their potential for choice and access to opportunities, while this figure globally averages over 60 percent.

A group of United Nations experts, in a joint statement, once again emphasized the central role of gender in advancing human rights and achieving equality for all.
