British couple arrive in UK after being freed by Taliban

Peter Reynolds, 80 years old, and his wife Barbie, 76 years old, who had lived in Afghanistan for nearly two decades, arrived at Heathrow Airport on a flight from Doha.

The couple met their daughter in Qatar on Friday, September 19. Meanwhile, their son Jonathan Reynolds, in an interview with BBC Radio 4, said that he is "very happy and infinitely grateful" to those who played a role in his parents' release.

The Taliban detained the couple on February 1, 2025, on charges of violating Afghanistan's laws; the reason for their detention was never announced.

Peter and Barbie Reynolds, who married in Kabul in 1970, had been running a charitable educational program for the past 18 years; a program that was also approved by local Taliban authorities even after the Taliban's return to power in 2021.

International media reported that the British couple, who had been detained by the Taliban in Afghanistan for nearly eight months, returned to Britain after their release.
