Canada to recognize Palestine in September

Mr. Carney stated on Wednesday (July 29) during a press conference: "Canada has long been committed to a two-state solution; the establishment of an independent, stable, and sovereign country named Palestine that lives in peace and security alongside Israel."

According to him, this decision was made following new commitments received from Mahmoud Abbas, the President of the Palestinian Authority.

Carney said that Abbas has assured that in the upcoming elections, which will be held next year, the Hamas group will have no role. Additionally, the President of the Palestinian Authority has promised that the country of Palestine will not be militarized.

The Prime Minister of Canada added: "We have decided to recognize Palestine at a time when we see a genuine commitment from Palestinian leadership to reforms and the path to peace."

Carney emphasized that Ottawa will continue to support Israel's existence as an independent country with the right to security in the Middle East; however, he believes that lasting peace in the region requires the formation of an effective Palestinian state that also recognizes Israel's security.

This announcement follows a phone call between Carney and Keir Starmer, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. The UK had previously warned that it would take similar action if Israel did not agree to conditions such as accepting a ceasefire.

France has also announced that it will recognize Palestine in September, a move that appears to have ushered in a new phase of international support for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.

In contrast, Israel's Foreign Ministry has reacted strongly to this decision, stating in a statement: "The change in the Canadian government's stance at this time is a reward for the terrorist group Hamas and harms efforts to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages."

Nevertheless, Canadian officials emphasize that their decision is based on the new commitments of Palestinian leadership and within the framework of supporting lasting peace.

Mark Carney, the Prime Minister of Canada, has announced that the country will recognize Palestine as a state in September, coinciding with the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
