Sanae Takaichi was elected as the first female prime minister in Japan's history.

This event marks a turning point in Japan's traditional and patriarchal society, a country where politics and workplaces are still largely dominated by older men.

Takaichi, 64 years old, a former television presenter, grew up in Nara near Osaka and has now risen to the pinnacle of Japan's political power. Known for her interests in playing heavy drums and motorcycling, she is a disciple and intellectual follower of Shinzo Abe, Japan's former prime minister who was assassinated in 2022.

Takaichi assumes power at a time when Japan faces widespread economic challenges and political deadlock. She is the fourth prime minister of the country since Abe's resignation in 2020, a fact that reflects the instability in Japanese politics.

Like Abe, Takaichi supports revising Japan's pacifist constitution and has visited the controversial Yasukuni Shrine, where the names of those convicted of war crimes in World War II are also enshrined. This action typically provokes anger from China and South Korea, two of Japan's key trading partners.

Takaichi officially takes the reins just days before a planned visit by U.S. President Donald Trump to Japan.

Japan's parliament on Tuesday elected Sanae Takaichi, a conservative politician and close ally of Shinzo Abe, as the country's first female prime minister in its history.
