Corporal punishment continues; Taliban flog five in Ghor and Balkh

The court wrote in a statement on (Wednesday, 7th of Aqrab) that each of these individuals was punished with 39 lashes in public.

The Taliban Supreme Court stated that four individuals, including two women, were punished in Ghor for moral corruption in the province’s stadium in the presence of the group’s officials and the public.

Meanwhile, the court, in a separate statement, reported the punishment of another individual in Balkh for transporting alcoholic beverages.

Since regaining control of Afghanistan, the Taliban has repeatedly punished individuals in public for various offenses, including theft, extramarital sexual relations, sodomy, and drug trafficking.

These actions have consistently faced severe criticism from human rights organizations and the United Nations.

These organizations state that flogging and other forms of corporal punishment in public constitute torture and violate Afghanistan’s international human rights commitments. They also emphasize that the Taliban’s rulings are issued and implemented without a transparent judicial process.

The Taliban Supreme Court has announced that five individuals in the provinces of Ghor and Balkh have been flogged on charges of moral corruption and transporting alcoholic beverages.
