Italy allocates two million euros for treatment and rehabilitation of Afghan addicts

The Italian Foreign Ministry's statement indicates that this financial assistance has been provided in collaboration with the government and the Italian International Cooperation Agency, with the aim of supporting women and men who are battling addiction and striving to rebuild their lives.

The United Nations Trust Fund for Afghanistan has also emphasized that this aid will not only keep treatment and rehabilitation centers operational but will also create opportunities for affected families to achieve better livelihoods.

According to Grazi Miele, Italy's representative for international affairs, his country remains committed to supporting Afghanistan's health sector, and this assistance can strengthen the capabilities of individuals on the path to recovery from addiction.

This initiative comes at a time when the Taliban, over the past four years, have gathered thousands of street addicts from the streets and transferred them to detention centers; however, civil society organizations and international bodies have repeatedly warned that this group lacks the necessary facilities and capacity to provide standard treatment for these individuals.

Based on United Nations statistics, nearly four million people in Afghanistan are grappling with the consequences of drug use, more than one-third of whom are women.

Italy has announced the allocation of two million euros to the United Nations Trust Fund for Afghanistan; a budget intended to sustain the operations of addiction treatment centers and rehabilitation services in the country.
