Taliban releases British couple after eight months in prison

Abdul Qahar Balkhi, the spokesperson for the Taliban’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, wrote on Friday, September 19, in a post on his “X” account that the two foreign nationals were released from prison after completing the judicial process.


According to him, the Taliban do not view the cases of foreign nationals from a political or transactional perspective, and Qatar’s role in securing the release of this couple isable.”


Meanwhile, international media reported that the 80-year-old man and his 76-year-old wife were transferred to Doha after their release and then traveled to the UK to reunite with their family.


The couple, who had lived in Afghanistan for nearly two decades, managed a non-governmental organization in Bamyan province that focused on educational and training activities.


According to reports, the elderly British couple was detained by the Taliban in early February of this year while returning to their home in Bamyan. Their son had repeatedly appealed to Taliban authorities and international organizations during this period to secure his parents’ release.

On Friday, the Taliban released an elderly British couple who had been detained by the group for eight months.
