United Nations: Afghanistan's multidimensional poverty reaches 52 percent under Taliban rule

The UN Secretary-General stated in a report published on Wednesday, 19 Sunbula, that over the past years, the focus has been on military expenditures, and between 2001 and 2020, the United States alone allocated 73 billion dollars in military aid.


The United Nations, citing a chart, has stated that the persistence of conflict has caused a five percent increase in multidimensional poverty in Afghanistan.


The report states that although military spending contributes to the gross domestic product, these same resources, if invested in sectors such as health, education, or infrastructure, could have led to stronger and more widespread economic development.


With the Taliban's return to power in Afghanistan, poverty, destitution, and unemployment among citizens have intensified, and over the past four years, people have been grappling with severe hunger and poverty.

The United Nations has announced in a new report that following the Taliban's return to, the continuation of conflicts has led to an increase in poverty, raising it from 46.9 to 52.2 percent of the population.
