US deploys F-35 fighter jets to Puerto Rico amid regional tensions

This military deployment is taking place amid escalating tensions between Washington and Caracas, while U.S. operations against drug trafficking networks in the Caribbean Sea have intensified.


Based on these reports, in recent days, in addition to the fighter jets, transport helicopters, Osprey aircraft, and several other military aircraft have also been spotted in the area. Additionally, the arrival of U.S. forces at this base has been reported.


Just a few days ago, the U.S. Secretary of Defense, along with the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, made an unannounced visit to Puerto Rico. Although the U.S. Department of Defense has refrained from providing clear explanations about the mission of these fighter jets and has only stated that "there is no official change in the force posture to announce"; some informed sources say this deployment is in the framework of the U.S. President's order to combat drug cartels.


These developments are occurring while last week, U.S. naval forces targeted a Venezuelan ship on suspicion of carrying drugs, resulting in the deaths of 11 people. The Venezuelan government has deemed this action "illegal" and emphasized that the victims had no connection to trafficking. In addition, officials in Caracas claimed that a U.S. destroyer also detained a Venezuelan fishing vessel in this country's exclusive economic zone for several hours.


Given the capabilities of the F-35 fighter jets, which are among the most advanced aircraft of the new generation, their presence near Venezuela holds special military significance; because the Venezuelan Air Force still primarily relies on older F-16 fighter jets. This has led analysts to speak of an increasing imbalance of power in the region.

According to reports from international media, several advanced F-35 fighter jets from the United States Army landed on Saturday at the former Roosevelt Roads military base in Ceiba, Puerto Rico.
