Full-face veil ban rejected; Australian senator sparks fury by wearing burqa in parliament

Hanson returned to the Australian Senate wearing a black burqa for the second time on Monday. Other senators condemned the action. Mehreen Faruqi, a Muslim senator from the Greens party, called it blatant racism, and Fatima Payman, an independent senator, described it as disgraceful.

Penny Wong, Australia's Foreign Minister, deemed the action disrespectful and proposed suspending Hanson for refusing to remove the burqa. Hanson wrote on Facebook: "If they don't want me to wear a burqa, they should ban the burqa." She had previously done the same in 2017 and has long advocated for a national burqa ban.

Hanson has a history of controversial statements, including warnings that Australia might be "swamped" by Muslims or Asians, and this background has led to widespread reactions in the media and parliament to her recent actions.

Pauline Hanson, an Australian senator from the One Nation party, sparked outrage by wearing a burqa in parliament. She took this action in protest against the rejection of her bill to ban full-face coverings in public places.
