Pakistan Defense Minister: Ceasefire with Taliban conditional on curbing Pakistani militants

On Monday (29 Mizan), in an interview with Reuters, he emphasized that the ceasefire with the Afghan Taliban is "conditional and fragile."

Khawaja Asif stated: "Any movement from Afghan soil is a direct violation of this agreement. The continuation of the ceasefire depends on this condition."

According to him, the agreement explicitly states that militants should not, under any circumstances, enter Pakistan from Afghan soil.

Previously, Zabihullah Mujahid, the Taliban spokesperson, had said that during the negotiations, both sides agreed not to take any hostile actions against each other and to base their relations on mutual respect and good neighborliness.

According to Mujahid, the Taliban has committed not to support the activities or attacks of groups acting against the Pakistani government. He added that both sides have agreed to refrain from any attacks against each other's security forces, civilians, and infrastructure.

The Taliban spokesperson also stated that, with the mediation of Qatar and Turkey, a joint mechanism will be established to investigate claims and implement the terms of the agreement.

Meanwhile, Khawaja Asif, Pakistan's Defense Minister, confirmed the ceasefire and announced that the second round of talks between the two sides will be held on October 25 in Istanbul.

Khawaja Asif, Pakistan's Defense Minister, says a ceasefire with the Taliban will only be sustainable if the Afghan Taliban prevent the movement and attacks of Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan fighters from Afghan soil.
