Spread of intimidation; Taliban announce execution of four in Balkh

The court stated in its newsletter on Wednesday (25 November) that these individuals were punished with 20 to 30 lashes.

The Taliban's Supreme Court added that the punishment was carried out in the presence of judicial, military, local officials, and local people.

The Taliban's field courts continue despite international condemnation.

Human rights organisations and the United Nations have repeatedly expressed concern over the continuation of this practice, stating that defendants in the Taliban's judicial system are deprived of fair trials and access to defence lawyers.

Despite widespread criticism, the Taliban say that these actions are in accordance with Sharia and that they will not back down from them.

The Taliban's Supreme Court has announced in a newsletter that four people, including two women, have been flogged in public on charges of "illicit relations".
