UN: Organization of Islamic Cooperation has key role in talks with Taliban

Khaled Khiari, the UN Deputy Secretary-General for Middle East Affairs, emphasized during a Security Council meeting on Thursday (2 Asad) that the spiritual and moral standing of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation is an effective tool for influencing the Taliban's behavior.

He stated that the organization, through continuous engagement with de facto Taliban leaders, is striving to preserve women’s rights, particularly in the areas of education and social participation.

Khiari further noted that the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation is one of the key players in the UN-led political process, especially within the framework of the Doha negotiations. He described this cooperation as part of the implementation of Chapter VIII of the UN Charter and in line with the “Pact for the Future” document, an agreement adopted to strengthen global multilateral cooperation.

These remarks come at a time when the Taliban, since returning to power in August 2021, have imposed severe and systematic restrictions on the fundamental rights of women and girls, including bans on education, employment, and public participation. Despite international condemnations, the global community’s efforts to improve the human rights situation in Afghanistan have so far yielded no tangible results.

The United Nations has announced that cooperation with the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, as an influential religious institution, can play a decisive role in engaging with the Taliban and advocating for the rights of women and girls in Afghanistan.
