Jonathan Trott to step down as Afghanistan national cricket team coach after 2026 World Cup

The Afghanistan Cricket Board announced that changes in the coaching staff are part of a strategic plan to strengthen the team and the future of cricket in the country.

Trott, who was introduced as head coach of the team in July 2022, has played a key role in the team's progress and in transforming it into a formidable force in white-ball competitions. His contract was initially for 18 months and was then extended in 2024 and again until 2025, which indicates satisfaction with his performance.

During his coaching tenure, Afghanistan has achieved remarkable results, including an outstanding performance in the 2023 Fifty-over World Cup, where the national team defeated England, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, and even came close to defeating the eventual champion, Australia.

Trott, expressing gratitude for working with the Afghanistan national team, said he takes great pride in the shared achievements with the players. He praised the players' passion, perseverance, and hard work, adding that he will always remain a supporter of Afghanistan cricket.

Jonathan Trott, head coach of the Afghanistan national cricket team, announced that he will step down from his position after the conclusion of the 2026 Twenty20 World Cup. This tournament will be held next year hosted by India and Sri Lanka.
