Continued repression of journalists; Shakib Ahmad Nazari arrested by Taliban commander

Media sources, expressing concern over the uncertain fate of Shakib Ahmad Nazari, state that he was detained along with two officials from organizations supporting journalists by the Taliban’s Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice and is currently held in the group’s intelligence detention.

This detention has sparked widespread reactions among journalists and media activists.

Abdulaziz Sakhizada, an Afghan journalist and former presenter of political programs on Ariana Television, now living in exile, wrote in a Facebook post expressing concern about Mr. Nazari’s fate: “Shakib has been detained solely for the crime of journalism, and there is fear that, like previous cases, he may be coerced into forced confessions.”

Abdulaziz Sakhizada also stated that Shakib Ahmad Nazari had collaborated with international media for years, and his latest project was working with a Japanese television network.

In recent days, a video of confessions by the head of Afghanistan’s media institution was published by media outlets close to the Taliban, which has generated significant reactions on social networks.

Reports indicate that the detention of Shakib Ahmad Nazari is part of a new wave of pressure and suppression of journalists in Afghanistan.

Previously, the Afghanistan Journalists Center also announced that in recent weeks, at least seven journalists and media workers have been detained in Kabul and various provinces.

So far, international organizations defending media freedom have not issued an official response to these detentions, and the Taliban have not commented on the reasons or details of the detentions. Additionally, some social media users have stated that the video of the forced confession by the head of Afghanistan’s media institution lacks credibility.

Informed sources confirm that Shakib Ahmad Nazari, an Afghan journalist and collaborator with international media, was detained by the Taliban in Kabul on Thursday, 2nd of Asad.
