EU Special Representative calls for start of national dialogue in Afghanistan

Bertrand announced at his press conference that the European Union sees a multilateral process as the only solution to the international community's concerns regarding Afghanistan and called on the Taliban to fulfill their international commitments.


He added that during this trip, he met with several Taliban officials, UNAMA representatives, diplomats, and United Nations institutions.


Bertrand stressed that the European Union's approach is coordinated with the United Nations and includes identifying initial steps that can be agreed upon by all parties.


The EU representative stated that the organization emphasizes the need for inclusive participation, Afghanistan's adherence to international commitments, and the expansion of internal dialogues to achieve peace. He also conveyed the European Union's concerns about the presence and cross-border activities of terrorist groups in Afghanistan to Taliban officials.


Bertrand noted that the European Union recognizes the Taliban's actions in reducing opium cultivation and combating the ISIS-Khorasan group. During his trip, he met and held discussions with Abdul Salam Hanafi, the Administrative Deputy Prime Minister of the Taliban, Din Mohammad Hanif, the Minister of Economy, Abdul Kabir, the Minister of Refugees and Repatriation, Shir Ahmad Haqqani, the Minister of Information and Culture, and Mohammad Naeem Wardak, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs.


This trip took place amid escalating tensions between Pakistan and the Taliban. Bertrand met with Taliban officials and the Pakistani ambassador in Kabul, emphasizing the need for restraint, respect for territorial integrity, protection of civilians, and the resumption of security dialogues between the two sides.


This is Gilles Bertrand's first mission as the European Union's Special Representative for Afghanistan. He previously served as a diplomat in Kabul during the Karzai government.
