Taliban arrest Russian anthropologist on suspicion of jewelry smuggling

According to the report, the Russian ambassador in Kabul is following up on Kaverin’s situation, who is a member of the Institute of Oriental Studies at the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Based on Tass’s report, Kaverin himself announced on his Telegram channel on Sunday that he was detained in Kunduz, and the reason was the accusation of smuggling jewelry.

He added in his message: “I hope the matter will be limited to interrogation and preparing documents related to the jewelry. Sometimes I am allowed to use my smartphone.”

Meanwhile, Ahmad Khaibar Akifi, an Afghan journalist residing in Russia, strongly criticized the Taliban’s action in response to Kaverin’s detention, stating that he is not a smuggler. In his note, Akifi referred to Svyatoslav Kaverin with the nickname “Khosrow Jan.”

He wrote on his Facebook page: “I hope the big mullahs make their little mullahs understand that Khosrow Jan is absolutely not a smuggler; his crime is that he loves Afghanistan, whether it’s a republic or an Islamic emirate.”

Reports indicate that Kaverin was transferred to Kabul after his detention in Kunduz, but no details are available about his place of detention.

At the same time, Kaverin’s close associates said they have had no contact with him since Saturday evening.

Meanwhile, Tass reported that Russian diplomats are following up on the situation of this Russian citizen, and the Russian embassy in Kabul has also announced that it is seriously pursuing the matter.

The state news agency "Tass" reported on Sunday that the Taliban group has detained a Russian anthropologist named Svyatoslav Kaverin in Kunduz province on charges of smuggling jewelry.
