Moon in Earth's shadow; Second total eclipse of 2025 occurs

Citizens of Afghanistan, like those in some other countries, witnessed the total lunar eclipse on the evening of Sunday, September 7.


A lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth aligns directly between the Sun and the Moon, blocking the Sun’s light and casting its shadow on the Moon’s surface. During a total eclipse, the Moon is fully immersed in the Earth’s shadow and often appears a brilliant red, a phenomenon sometimes referred to as a “blood moon.”


This event is the second total lunar eclipse of the year, during which the Earth is positioned in a straight line between the Sun and the Moon.

The second total lunar eclipse of 2025, on the nights of September 7 and , was visible in the across large parts of Asia, Africa, Europe, Australia.
