RSF: Neighboring and third countries should grant asylum to Afghan journalists

On Thursday, 23 Asad, the organization published a report stating that with the Taliban's rise to power in August 2021, Afghan journalists fled from Taliban harassment to continue their work in other countries; however, neighboring countries are not granting them asylum.

Reporters Without Borders, while condemning the harassment of journalists and media workers by the Taliban, has urged third countries—both those serving as transit routes for journalists and those accepting refugees—to provide asylum to Afghan journalists facing serious reprisals in Afghanistan.

The organization stated that Afghan journalists are at risk of threats, detention, and torture for speaking the truth.

Martin Roux, head of the crisis desk at Reporters Without Borders, said that journalists who have fled to neighboring countries due to increasing dangers from the Taliban face constant threats, uncertainty, and unbearable challenges in those countries.

Reporters Without Borders has called for the protection of Afghan journalists and the issuance of visas for them.

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) had previously warned in its quarterly report that the activities of private media in Afghanistan are becoming increasingly restricted, and the information environment in the country has become unprecedentedly constrained.

According to statistics from the Afghanistan Media Support Organization, from August 2021 to July 2025, at least 539 cases of violence against journalists have been recorded.

UNAMA has warned that the continuation of this trend will severely limit the Afghan people's access to free and independent information and place the country's media environment on the brink of complete collapse.

This comes as the Taliban, since returning to power, have exerted increasing pressure on the media and have repeatedly detained, tortured, and imprisoned journalists and media workers.

The organization Reporters Without Borders, amid growing concerns about the deportation of refugees, has called on neighboring countries and third countries to provide asylum to Afghan journalists.
