Arbitrary arrests continue; Taliban arrest Balkh poet and cultural activist

It is said that the reason for his arrest is his cultural and literary activities; however, there is no news yet about his condition or place of detention.

One source said that a week has passed since Bamdad's arrest, and his friends and relatives have gone to the Taliban's office to follow up on his situation; but Taliban officials first said the matter needs to be investigated, and then claimed that he has been transferred to Kabul. Nevertheless, the Taliban have so far expressed ignorance about his place of detention or condition.

His friends on social media have said that the reason for the arrest was holding cultural programs and the presence of some women in poetry sessions and educational gatherings.

Syed Sakandar Husseini Bamdad was born in 1991 in Balkh, and among his works, one can mention "A Kiss on the Throat of the Reed," "King of the Boxwood Valley," and "Boundless Oppression."

After the Taliban's takeover of Afghanistan on August 15, 2021, this group has proceeded to arrest a wide range of civil activists, journalists, and cultural figures. Human rights organizations say that in many cases, detainees do not have access to lawyers, and fair trial procedures are not observed.

Local sources in Balkh confirm that Syed Sakandar Husseini Bamdad, a poet and cultural activist, was arrested by Taliban intelligence on Sunday, the first of Qaws, while on his way to his workplace.
