Afghan Journalists Center: 140 Media Freedom Violations Recorded in Past Six Months

The organization emphasized that this figure shows a 56 percent increase compared to the same period last year.

On Friday (20 Saratan), the Afghanistan Journalists Center issued a statement announcing that these cases included direct threats to media outlets and intimidation of media workers.

According to the center’s report, during this period, at least 20 journalists were detained by the Taliban on charges of “propaganda against the group”; six of these journalists have been sentenced to six months to one year in prison and are currently serving their sentences in Pul-e-Charkhi and Bagram prisons.

The report states that pressures and restrictions on female journalists have also increased in Afghanistan under Taliban rule.

The Afghanistan Journalists Center added that the Taliban’s restriction on publishing images of living beings has now expanded to 14 additional provinces.

The report also refers to the prohibition of broadcasting political and economic discussions, which the Taliban recently ordered, stating that this directive has effectively blocked free access to information.

The Afghanistan Journalists Center, while warning about the widespread suppression of media, has called on the Taliban to respect media freedom in accordance with the law.

The Afghanistan Journalists Center has announced that at least 140 cases of violations against media freedom and journalists have been recorded in the country during the first six months of 2025.
