Deadly traffic accident in Herat; Taliban put death toll at 71

The incident occurred when a passenger bus traveling from Islam Qala toward Kabul first collided with a motorcycle and then crashed into a truck carrying fuel. The intensity of the collision caused a massive fire in the bus.


According to local sources, three passengers were pulled out alive, but their condition is reported to be critical.


Mohammad Yusuf Saeedi, the spokesperson for the Herat governor, told the media that the bus was transporting passengers who had recently been deported from Iran and were gathered in Islam Qala.


Taliban traffic police have cited excessive speed and driver negligence as the cause of the incident.


This comes at a time when a large number of Afghan migrants have returned to the country after being deported from Iran, with many traveling in difficult conditions from Islam Qala toward Kabul and other provinces.


It is said that the lack of effective traffic regulations, poor road conditions, and substandard driving on Afghanistan’s highways are the main factors contributing to the rising toll of road accidents. Last year alone, two similar incidents on the country’s central roads claimed the lives of at least 52 people.

Local Taliban authorities in Herat province have confirmed that at least 71 people lost their lives following a severe traffic accident on the Herat-Islam Qala highway. According to Taliban officials, 17 children are among the victims.
