Afghanistan among the five most insecure countries in the world; Crises persist

The international organization “Institute for Economics and Peace,” which annually assesses the level of peace and stability in countries worldwide, announced that Afghanistan in 2025 ranked 158th out of 163 countries.

The report indicates that despite a reduction in full-scale armed conflicts, structural issues and deep-seated security and political challenges persist.

According to the report’s findings, Afghanistan scores among the lowest in areas such as the proliferation of small arms, the rate of violent crimes, political instability, targeted attacks, and the concerning situation of refugees and internally displaced persons.

Analysts from this organization emphasized that the absence of an effective governance system and widespread humanitarian crises remain the primary obstacles to restoring calm and achieving sustainable development in the country.

The report also notes that the high level of violence and insecurity has inflicted severe damage on Afghanistan’s economy, destroying more than 40 percent of the country’s gross domestic product.

Furthermore, Afghanistan, alongside countries such as Ukraine, Yemen, Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, is among the nations that have suffered the most human and economic losses due to conflicts. These losses include the destruction of job opportunities, reduced investment, and the displacement of millions of people.

Additionally, based on the report’s data, the global trend of peace is also not in a favorable state. In the past year, 59 active military conflicts at the state level were recorded worldwide, the highest number since the end of World War II.

While conflict-ridden countries such as Afghanistan, Russia, and Ukraine rank at the bottom of the list, European countries like Iceland, Ireland, New Zealand, Austria, and Switzerland have been identified as the safest and most peaceful countries in the world.

In the latest international report on the state of peace in various countries, Afghanistan has once again ranked among the lowest in the global list, identified as one of the most insecure countries.
