Finland to close its embassy in Afghanistan in 2026

The country's Foreign Ministry states that this decision is part of a broad review of Finland's network of foreign representations, based on operational considerations, changes in political conditions, and a focus of resources on more important countries.

The Finnish government announced on (Friday, November 28), that in light of the rapidly changing operational environment, some representations will be closed and others strengthened.

Elina Valtonen, Finland's Foreign Minister, said this review is aimed at increasing efficiency and strengthening Finland's international position, and the closure of the embassies in Kabul, Islamabad, and Yangon will be implemented by order of President Alexander Stubb in 2026.

Finland's Foreign Ministry has also cited the limited economic and trade relations with these three countries as another reason for this decision. Following the Taliban's return to power in Afghanistan, many Western countries have closed their embassies in Kabul and are conducting their activities from Doha.

Finland has announced that it will close its embassies in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Myanmar in 2026.
