Afghanistan-Pakistan borders closed; Eggplant prices in Pakistan increase fivefold

A Pakistani official stated that at the Torkham border crossing, approximately 5,000 containers of goods are stranded on both sides of the border.

The president of the Pakistan-Afghanistan Chamber of Commerce and Industry said in Kabul on Thursday, October 23, that since the start of the conflicts, all trade and transit between the two countries has been halted.

He added: "With each passing day, both sides suffer losses of about one million dollars."

According to this report, basic food items such as fresh fruits and vegetables, minerals, medicines, wheat, rice, sugar, meat, and dairy products constitute a significant portion of the annual $2.3 billion trade volume between the two countries.

It is worth noting that the border crossings were closed following Pakistan's airstrikes and the conflicts between the two countries on October 11. As a result of these conflicts, dozens were killed and wounded on both sides. This incident has been the most intense conflict between the two countries since the Taliban took control of Afghanistan in 2021.

Following that, last week, a ceasefire agreement between the two countries was reached with the mediation of Qatar and Turkey; however, border trade remains halted. The next round of negotiations is scheduled to take place in Istanbul on October 25.

Reuters has reported that the closure of the borders between Afghanistan and Pakistan has led to an increase in the prices of essential goods in both countries. According to this report, since the start of the conflict between the two countries, the price of eggplant in Pakistan has increased fivefold over the past month.
