Witkoff: Putin has agreed to 'strong security guarantees' as part of peace deal

He added that this issue was raised during the Trump-Putin meeting on Friday.

Witkoff likened these guarantees to Article 5 of the NATO treaty. He said Putin has also agreed to pass a law in Russia to refrain from entering any other territory, whether in Ukraine or elsewhere in Europe, as part of the potential agreement.

However, Putin has demanded the cession of the Donbas region to Russia in return and insists that the current front lines in the other occupied regions, including Kherson and Zaporizhzhia provinces, be maintained.

Russia has also not backed down from its key demands, including the downsizing of Ukraine’s military, forgoing NATO membership, and turning Ukraine into a neutral country.

Steve Witkoff, Trump’s special envoy for Middle East affairs, said in an interview with CNN television network that Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, has agreed that Ukraine would receive “strong security guarantees” from the United States as part of a potential peace agreement.
