Putin: Afghanistan under Taliban rule still faces challenges

Putin said the Taliban have managed to establish security in some areas and have taken actions against terrorist groups, including ISIS. These remarks come as some Russian officials had previously expressed concerns about the presence and activities of terrorist groups in Afghanistan.

The President of Russia, who traveled to India on a two-day visit, spoke about Afghanistan and its security developments in an interview in Moscow one day before his trip.

In recent weeks, an attack on the Tajikistan border that resulted in the deaths of five Chinese citizens has heightened regional countries' concerns about the spread of terrorist threats. The Tajikistan government says the attackers were organized from inside Afghanistan; the Taliban has pledged to cooperate in identifying the perpetrators.

In another part of the interview, Putin defended the Taliban's performance in combating terrorism and drug trafficking—a matter that Western countries still consider insufficient and make the lifting of extensive restrictions on women a condition for any recognition.

In this conversation, two Indian female journalists also expressed dissatisfaction regarding the ban on women's education and work in Afghanistan and the Taliban officials' treatment of female journalists. Putin, referring to the presence of Amir Khan Muttaqi in Delhi, said engagement with the Taliban is essential to influence this group's approach.

Vladimir Putin, President of Russia, emphasized in an interview with an Indian media outlet that despite the Taliban's control over the situation, Afghanistan still faces serious problems. Referring to decades of civil war in the country, he described the current situation as "deplorable."
