Asif Durrani: Taliban are happy to control the poor and hungry population of Afghanistan

Mr. Durrani wrote in a post on the social network X on Sunday (16 Qaws) that Afghanistan has been put up for sale by its leaders—leaders who now enjoy comfortable lives abroad, while Afghanistan's impoverished people grapple with harsh living conditions and dependence on international aid.

This former diplomat pointed out that the fall of Afghanistan resulted from widespread involvement in creating chaos, and the situation spiraled out of control when Daoud Khan overthrew Zahir Shah's monarchy. With the emergence of the mujahideen and the Taliban, many institutions collapsed, and the leaders of these groups, under the pretext of sovereignty, engaged in personal deals for their own gain.

Durrani added that Afghanistan today has become a safe haven for numerous terrorist organizations, and the Taliban are delighted with the plight of a population struggling to meet even their minimum food needs. He concluded his message by saying: "May God have mercy on the helpless people of Afghanistan. Amen."

Meanwhile, tensions between the Taliban and Pakistan continue. The closure of border crossings and the halt of trade between the two countries have also driven up the prices of food and medicine in Afghanistan. At the same time, drought, reduced international aid, and the return of migrants have made the economic conditions of the people even more dire.

Asif Durrani, Pakistan's former diplomat on Afghan affairs, says that the Taliban are pleased with their power over a population struggling to secure even two adequate meals a day.
