UN calls for lifting ban on women working in its institutions in Afghanistan

This organization, on Sunday (December 6), by issuing a statement, said that the provision of humanitarian assistance to women and girls must be carried out by women and warned that the continuation of this ban puts vital services at serious risk.

Susan Ferguson, the Special Representative of the United Nations Women section in Afghanistan, said that despite the passage of three months since the imposition of these restrictions, female United Nations employees have continued their lifesaving activities for the people of Afghanistan from their homes and in local communities.

She warned that the continuation of these restrictions severely undermines the United Nations' ability to safely reach women and girls and provide culturally appropriate assistance to the most vulnerable groups.

In part of this statement, it was emphasized: "Women are irreplaceable for the United Nations' activities in Afghanistan. Assistance must be provided by women and for women."

The United Nations added that female employees of this institution, in recent months, have supported earthquake victims in eastern and northern Afghanistan, as well as returnees from Iran and Pakistan who needed food, clean water, health services, safe shelter, and livelihood support.

In conclusion, the United Nations has described these bans as violations of the fundamental principles of human rights and equality enshrined in the United Nations Charter and stated that institutions affiliated with this organization are still implementing temporary adjustments and reviewing options to continue principled humanitarian operations in Afghanistan.

The United Nations Women section, by issuing a statement, has called for the lifting of the ban on female employees working in this organization's institutions in Afghanistan and has emphasized their safe access to offices and field operations.
