UN cuts 2026 humanitarian aid budget to $33 billion

This figure represents a significant decrease from the $47 billion budget for 2025 and indicates a decline in global support.

OCHA intends to assist approximately 135 million people worldwide with this budget—individuals affected by wars, natural disasters, epidemics, and food shortages. Meanwhile, this year the organization has received only $15 billion, the lowest level of global aid in the past decade.

According to next year's plan, more than $4.1 billion will be needed to support three million people in the Palestinian territories, $2.9 billion for the population displacement crisis in Sudan, and $2.8 billion for areas surrounding Syria. The budget cuts have led the United Nations and its humanitarian partners to support about 25 million fewer people this year than last.

Tom Fletcher, head of OCHA, commented on the 2025 situation: "Hunger intensified, food budgets were cut, health systems collapsed, and diseases spread. Millions were left without access to food, medical care, or basic support, and hundreds of aid organizations were forced to shut down."

The reduction in aid has particularly impacted the United Nations' capacity in Afghanistan, with the number of people covered by assistance dropping from 10 million to two million. Reports indicate that half of Afghanistan's population lives below the poverty line and more than 22 million people require aid.

Carl Skau, deputy executive director of the World Food Programme, reported an increase in poverty and malnutrition in Afghanistan and warned that these issues will worsen during the winter season. He also stated that approximately 320 million people worldwide face acute food insecurity and that the organization's budget has declined by more than 40 percent. The shortage of financial resources has forced the World Food Programme to lay off about five thousand staff members this year.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has announced that it has reduced its requested budget for 2026 to $33 billion.
