UNICEF: More than 11 million children in Afghanistan will need urgent assistance in 2026

This agency has requested funding of nearly $950 million to deliver vital aid to 12 million people across the country.

UNICEF warned in a report on (Wednesday, December 9) that Afghan citizens are facing multiple widespread crises simultaneously; crises such as natural disasters, reduced international support, fragile economic conditions, and severe restrictions on access to basic services.

The report states that women, children, adolescents, and marginalized groups have been identified as the most vulnerable segments of the population, emphasizing the need to provide essential services and support for these groups.

UNICEF has also pointed to the restrictions imposed on women and girls, warning that the consequences of these policies could persist for generations to come. The agency added that reduced investment in the water and sanitation sector has further exacerbated the country's humanitarian needs.

Based on this report, the United Nations Children's Fund intends to provide lifesaving and essential services—including health care, nutrition, education, and access to safe drinking water—to 12 million people in Afghanistan next year through the implementation of relief and development programs.

The United Nations Children's Fund has announced that in 2026, more than 21 million people in Afghanistan, including approximately 11.6 million children, will require humanitarian assistance.
