German Police: Role of Newly Arrived Afghan and Syrian Migrants in Crime Prominent

According to the newspaper *Welt*, in violent crimes, 163 cases are registered per 100,000 Germans, while the figure for Syrian migrants is 1,740 and for Afghans, 1,722. Out of a total of 3.1 million registered criminal incidents, approximately 331,000 cases (11 percent) involved at least one newly arrived suspect.

This report includes migrants with an undefined status and does not cover refugees with legal residency, German emigrants, or skilled students and workers. In sexual offenses and drug crimes, the share of Afghans and Syrians exceeds their proportion of the population; however, Ukrainian citizens are underrepresented among suspects relative to their share of the newly arrived population.

Alexander Dobrindt, Germany's Interior Minister, has stated that those who work and abide by the laws "have the right to stay"; but those deemed a security threat "do not have the right to stay," and the program to return them to Afghanistan and Syria will continue.

Germany is one of the European countries with the largest population of Afghan and Syrian refugees.

Germany's Federal Police have announced that the share of newly arrived Afghan and Syrian migrants who still lack a defined residency status is higher than the German population in crimes, particularly violence and murder. However, in 2024, crimes involving at least one migrant have decreased by about three percent.
