Donald Trump: Zelensky is using war as an excuse to stay in power

Trump added: "They talk about democracy; but from a certain point on, it's no longer democracy." He also stated that Zelensky was elected in April 2019 with over 70 percent of the votes; but his five-year term under normal circumstances should have ended in 2024. Nevertheless, according to Trump, there are reasons why he would want to remain in power.

Following Trump's remarks, Zelensky responded that he is ready to hold elections, provided that the United States or the European Union can guarantee the necessary security. He said: "I now clearly declare that I have the will and readiness to hold elections and ask the United States and its European counterparts to provide the necessary security."

However, Ukraine's constitution prohibits holding elections during wartime, and Russia's war against Ukraine, which began in February 2022, will enter its fifth year by 2026.

Russian officials have long called the Ukrainian government "illegitimate" and accuse Zelensky of turning the country's ordinary people against Russia. At the same time, talks to end the war between Russia and Ukraine, mediated by the United States, are underway, and a peace agreement is expected to be reached.

Donald Trump, President of the United States, said in an interview with Politico on Wednesday, December 10, regarding the non-holding of elections in Ukraine that Volodymyr Zelensky, instead of striving to end the war with Russia, is using it as a pretext for remaining in power.
