Shirin Ebadi: Afghan women have been left without support in their fight for their rights

She called on Afghan men to stand alongside women and emphasized that the Taliban’s restrictions have placed everyone’s lives under pressure.

At this tribunal, numerous documents were presented regarding the Taliban’s violations of women’s rights, and the group was condemned for its systematic discrimination against women.

Ebadi deemed the Hague court’s decision to detain some Taliban leaders insufficient and urged countries engaging with the Taliban to condition their relations on changes in the group’s behavior. She also criticized the cooperation of certain governments, such as Russia and China, with the Taliban.

Ebadi condemned the severe restrictions against women and girls, including bans on education and the silencing of women’s voices in the media, and accused the United Nations of failing to act. She warned that global aid should not be placed in the Taliban’s hands, as it does not reach the people.

She stressed solidarity between Iranian and Afghan women, stating that their joint efforts could triumph over regimes that suppress women’s rights by abusing religion.

Shirin Ebadi, the Nobel Peace Prize laureate, commended the resilience of Afghan women at the closing session of the People's Tribunal on the Taliban’s Actions, stating that they have been left alone in their fight for their rights.
