Spain's symbolic action; Fawzia Kofi appreciates country's support for Afghan women

Ms. Koofi wrote in a message on the social network X that this action demonstrates "a genuine commitment beyond words," adding that, despite the shrinking public space for the people of Afghanistan and the country's marginalization amid global crises, the attention of the Spanish government and people to Afghanistan is commendable.


This room was named following the conclusion of the second round of the Women of Afghanistan meeting titled "Listen to Us" in the city of Madrid. The meeting, held on Thursday, December 12 (21 Qaws), at the Spanish Foreign Ministry headquarters with the participation of about 50 women, was aimed at "advancing accountability mechanisms for Afghan women."


Mir Dad Nega, a former Afghan diplomat and one of the meeting's participants, says the room named after Women of Afghanistan is the same room where, in 2022, Afghan women took a group photo with Spain's Foreign Minister. He considers this action a sign of Spain's solidarity with Afghan women in "the worst conditions" and has emphasized that this naming will hold a valuable spiritual place in the history of Spain's Foreign Ministry.


The Afghan Women's Network, one of the organizers of this meeting, has also confirmed the news, stating that the naming of this room was done in tribute to the "efforts, resilience, and steadfastness of Afghan women."


According to a statement published on the official page of Spain's Foreign Ministry on the X network, José Manuel Albares, the country's Foreign Minister, welcomed Afghan women at this meeting and once again emphasized Spain's support for the rights of Afghan women.


The statement notes that Spain was among the first countries to condemn the restrictions imposed by the Taliban on women and to support the United Nations' accountability mechanisms to hold the Taliban accountable.


Spain's Foreign Minister also emphasized that his country remains committed to supporting Afghan women and does not recognize the Taliban regime.

Fawzia Koofi, a parliamentarian in Afghanistan's previous government, has welcomed the naming of a room in Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs after "Women of Afghanistan."
