Tehran meeting; Taliban official: Regional meetings should not portray Afghanistan as a crisis

Zakir Jalali, a Taliban Foreign Ministry official, criticized statements by Iranian officials regarding the situation in Afghanistan.

In response to the regional countries' representatives' meeting in Tehran, he emphasized that Afghanistan under Taliban rule has moved past the crisis stage, and the security-focused view of the country should give way to economic and commercial cooperation. Jalali urged Iran and other neighbors to focus their relations with Kabul on development and economic engagement.

These remarks come as Iranian officials have repeatedly expressed doubts about sustainable stability in Afghanistan. Iran's Foreign Minister stated at the Tehran meeting that peace in Afghanistan is unattainable without regional cooperation, and Iran's representative at the United Nations also stressed the need to form an inclusive government to prevent a return to war.

In contrast, Taliban officials say security is established across Afghanistan and the country is prepared to attract investment and expand regional trade. Jalali also claimed that the Taliban's "economy-centered" foreign policy could transform Afghanistan into a key transit hub between Central Asia, South Asia, and West Asia.

The Tehran meeting was held with representatives from several regional countries; however, the Taliban did not participate despite an official invitation. Pakistan warned at the meeting about the threat of terrorism from Afghan soil—a matter the Taliban has rejected, citing the existence of active regional cooperation channels as the reason for their absence.

A Taliban Foreign Ministry official has stated that Afghanistan should no longer be considered a "critical" country and does not require crisis management from regional countries.
