Taliban announce creation of independent oil and gas administration

Noor ul Haq Anwar, head of the Taliban's administrative office, said this new entity will bring together approximately eight directorates, along with several scattered ministries and departments related to oil and gas, under a single umbrella.

According to him, this decision was made at the proposal of the Taliban's prime minister and by order of the group's leader, with the stated goal of improving the production and import of oil and gas.

The Amu Darya basin, in northern Afghanistan, is one of the country's largest oil and gas reserves, and based on assessments by international organizations, this region holds approximately 962 million barrels of crude oil and 52 trillion cubic feet of natural gas.

In recent months, the Taliban has sold thousands of tons of oil extracted from this basin, generating millions of dollars in revenue. This move indicates the Taliban's efforts to centralize energy resources and increase revenue generation.

This newly established entity continues the path of developing oil and gas fields; previously, the Taliban began oil extraction in Qashqari district of Sar-e Pol province on April 8, 2022, and now, with the creation of this authority, activities related to oil and gas will become more structured.

Taliban leader Hibatullah Akhundzada has issued a decree to establish an "Independent Oil and Gas Authority."
