Amnesty International: Forced returns of Afghan refugees must stop

According to United Nations statistics, only Iran and Pakistan in 2025 have illegally returned more than two million six hundred thousand people to Afghanistan.

The organization has emphasized that the current conditions in Afghanistan, especially for women and girls, are extremely dire, and widespread human rights violations in the country have intensified. The occurrence of natural disasters and successive humanitarian crises has also worsened the situation, placing returnees at serious risk.

Amnesty International has also reported on efforts by European countries to return Afghan refugees and stated that Germany, Austria, and the European Union are in talks with the Taliban to facilitate forced expulsions.

The organization's report states that following recent border clashes with the Taliban, Pakistan has intensified its process of expelling Afghan refugees. Iran has also restricted access to social and economic services for refugees after the expiration of their temporary support documents.

Amnesty International has emphasized that under Taliban rule, women and girls have been systematically excluded from public life, their access to education after the age of twelve is prohibited, and their freedoms of movement and expression are restricted. Additionally, individuals who collaborated with the previous government or have criticized Taliban policies, including human rights defenders and journalists, face retaliatory actions.

The organization has warned in conclusion that the continued forced return of Afghan asylum seekers under current conditions places them at serious risk of human rights violations and must be halted without delay.

Amnesty International has warned that the forced return of refugees and asylum seekers to Afghanistan must be stopped immediately.
